In a time when apps and AI are replacing most of our social interactions, jobs involving the packaging and delivery of merchandise are among the few remaining growth industries. We have all heard stories about people removing packages from neighbors’ doorsteps if the recipients are not home when the package arrives, but sometimes crimes involving the theft of parcels are more complex than that. The most serious charges involve criminal conspiracies to divert large numbers of packages with valuable contents. Hialeah Man Charged With Burglary for Unauthorized Removal of Packages From Key Biscayne Apartment Building
In March 2026, a man from Hialeah was convicted of grand theft and sentenced to two years of probation. His probation was set to expire in March 2028. By August, though, he was facing new charges. One day in the summer, he went to an apartment building on Key Biscayne and told the front desk receptionist that he was authorized to retrieve packages. He then removed several UPS packages that had recently been delivered. Police arrested him when he attended his next appointment with a probation officer.
The defendant, who is 32 years old, is facing charges for grand theft, burglary of an occupied dwelling, and unlawful use of a communication device. One of the pieces of evidence that prosecutors plan to show at the trial is surveillance camera footage which, they allege, shows the defendant tracking the UPS truck and following it to the Key Biscayne apartment building. The Local 10 news website did not say how many packages he removed from the building, but it said that the merchandise in the packages had a retail value of over $6,000.
Graveyard Shift Package Handlers Accused of Stealing Thousands of Dollars’ Worth of Electronics
Two employees of a UPS warehouse in Doral, a man and a woman, both in their 50s, are accused of conspiracy to steal more than $100,000 in merchandise. Both of them worked the overnight shift, when few supervisors were present in the warehouse. Prosecutors allege that the defendants switched the shipping labels on packages containing valuable consumer electronics, to divert these packages to addresses controlled by the defendants or their accomplices. They are now facing charges for organized fraud and second-degree theft.
Miami-Dade Man Accused of Stealing Suitcase From MIA Baggage Carousel
Thousands of people retrieve suitcases and other items of checked luggage from the carousels at baggage claim at Miami International Airport every day. Plenty of things can go wrong at baggage claim, some of them accidental, but others leading to criminal charges. For example, it is possible to get injured when trying to lift a heavy suitcase off of the carousel. You can take the wrong suitcase home by mistake, although it is usually possible to resolve issues of misdirected luggage with the airline. Fights can break out at the baggage claim carousel. The drug-sniffing beagles that always seem to be parading around the baggage claim carousels of MIA in their DEA vests might pick up a drug scent from your luggage, or DEA agents might have trained them to pretend that this is why the dog is fixating on your suitcase.
Outright theft of suitcases is comparatively rare, but police are alleging that this happened recently at MIA. In July 2026, a 41-year-old man retrieved a suitcase from carousel 26, where the checked baggage from an American Airlines flight had arrived. He brought the suitcase to a men’s restroom on the third floor of the airport and remained there for a long time, eventually boarding the MIA mover monorail with the suitcase and leaving the terminal. The owner of the suitcase reported it stolen shortly thereafter.
A few days later, police saw the defendant loitering at baggage claim at MIA and arrested him. During a search, they found the stolen suitcase in his possession. The owner of the suitcase estimated that the value of its contents was more than $9,000. He is facing charges for grand theft. The court is not giving him the option to post bond because he was out on bond for another case at the time of the MIA incident.
