The most serious consequences of drunk driving are when a drunk driver causes an accident that results in serious injury or death. Miami-Dade Grandma Gets Probation After Pleading Guilty in Drunk Driving Accident That Killed Her Lifelong Friend
Sometimes getting criminal charges is the least of your worries. New Year’s Eve of 2024 tore apart a multigenerational family when the two matriarchs got into a car together, and only one of them got out alive. The defendant had known her friend since childhood, and her daughter was married to her friend’s son. They were the two grandmothers of some of the same children, and the families lived together in the same apartment complex in Hialeah. The family celebrated New Year’s Eve at their apartment complex; the adults drank alcohol, but they did not plan to go anywhere. Eventually, the two grandmothers decided to run an errand together, and they got into the defendant’s car in their apartment building.
In her drunken state, the defendant accelerated more than she meant to, and the car lurched forward and plunged into a lake on the property. When rescuers arrived, they were unable to save the defendant’s friend. The defendant, who was in her early 70s, eventually pleaded guilty to DUI vehicular homicide. As part of the plea deal, she permanently surrendered her driver’s license and agreed to serve a probation sentence.
Woman Who Fled Florida After Fatal DUI Accident Gets Jail Time After Extradition
The legal outcome was different with a fatal DUI accident that took place many years earlier. In the summer of 2006, a young woman got into her car near her home in Hialeah after a night of drinking. Another woman who lived nearby, also left her house to go for a walk shortly before 4:00 in the morning. In the darkness of night, she waited near an intersection until she could be sure that it was safe to cross the street. The light turned red, and the walk sign illuminated, so the pedestrian began crossing the street. Despite this, the drunk driver ran the red light and struck the pedestrian, causing fatal injuries. The drunk driver also sustained injuries severe enough to require hospitalization.
The investigation continued while the drunk driver was in the hospital. By the time she had recovered enough to be released from the hospital, the state was considering charging her with DUI manslaughter and related offenses. A friend of the driver who worked in law enforcement allegedly notified her of details of the ongoing investigation, and based on this information, she decided to leave the United States. News sources do not indicate where she went next, but in early 2026, she was in Mexico, and from there, she was extradited to Florida so that her case could continue. The court eventually convicted her of DUI homicide and reckless driving and handed down a sentence of five years in prison, in addition to permanently revoking her driver’s license.
News reports did not indicate whether any of her alleged accomplices ever faced criminal charges for their role in helping her evade the judicial process for nearly two decades. Charges of obstruction of justice or tampering with evidence might apply to the friend who told the defendant that she would likely face prosecution if she stayed in Florida.
