Adventures in Adderall

If you are going to impress people with stories about drug experiences, Adderall is not the most impressive. Some drugs have a natural mystique that far exceeds their footprint in the drug supply. For example, if you were born after 1980 and you have ever been in the same room with a Quaalude, you are automatically the most interesting person in the room. Weed, despite the relaxation of its legal status, still has a prosocial vibe; neither you nor I have ever met a mean pothead. Opioid pills are plain scary, but original heroin still holds its decades old glamor. By contrast, Adderall is no fun. It cannot shake its reputation as a drug for kids who annoy their teachers and classmates and for college students who have to buy friendship by selling their Adderall to their neighbors who need it to stay off of academic probation, not for any drug experience that would make a good story at a social gathering years down the road. According to the law, though, Adderall is no better and no worse than the cocaine that kept all the musicians on the classic rock station rail thin until they went to rehab and the fentanyl that makes every landlocked county in the United States, even the ones in Florida, an utterly depressing place. It is a Schedule II controlled substance, the category reserved for pharmaceutical drugs that, despite having legitimate medical uses, are as dangerous as dangerous can be. It is a combination of amphetamines; they can effectively treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy, or they can stimulate the central nervous system for any other purpose. Here, our Miami drug crimes defense lawyer explains recent cases involving the illegal sale or purchase of Adderall.
Man Confesses to Police After High-Speed Chase That He Took Quadruple Dose of Adderall
The Florida Keys are not the fastest paced part of southern Florida, so police noticed when a car with Virginia plates was going faster than it should. They pulled the car over and spoke to the driver, but he seemed disoriented, and his answers did not make sense. When an officer began asking him if he was suffering from medical problems, the man sped off, driving over sidewalks and knocked over signs, eventually crashing into a boat attached to a trailer in a driveway. By the time the chase was finished, the car had reached speeds of 122 miles per hour. When he stopped the second time, the man told police that he had taken 80 mg of Adderall before driving. The maximum daily dose that doctors typically prescribe for adults is 20 mg. Because the arrest took place in Florida, this is where the criminal case will proceed, even though the defendant lives in a wealthy Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C.
Florida Clinic Accused of Illegally Prescribing Millions of Adderall Pills
The legal consequences for misusing Adderall are not nearly as bad as the legal consequences for illegally prescribing it. In addition to medical practices that illegally distribute controlled substances facing stiff financial penalties, employees that knowingly participate in the illegal distribution can face criminal charges not only for drug crimes but also for financial crimes such as health insurance fraud if they falsify insurance claims to get insurance companies to pay for the drugs.
A clinic in St. Petersburg is under investigation for illegally prescribing Adderall to numerous patients who did not have a legitimate medical need for it, like an Adderall version of the notorious shady strip mall pain clinics that were ubiquitous in Florida about 15 years ago. The clinic allegedly conspired with a pharmaceutical company in California to illegally distribute 40 million Adderall pills to patients who did not need them. This scheme took place at the same time as a nationwide Adderall shortage, when it was difficult for people with existing prescriptions for Adderall to fill their prescriptions. By the end of 2025, two people in leadership roles at the company in California had been indicted and the corporate defendants in both companies had incurred fines. The investigation is ongoing, and defendants associated with the clinic in Florida may also get criminal charges for their role in the conspiracy.
